|Revelation 6: 1-8
I watched as the Lamb opened the seals… I looked and there before me was a white horse! It’s rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest… Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given the power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword… and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand… I looked and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him.
“Revelations is layer upon layer of symbolism and imagery, most of which relates back to scripture in the Old Testament. Though to many of us these may seem bizarre, to the well-read audience of the time, these symbols would have been obvious and familiar. The fourth seal here has been broken and the horsemen, according to their descriptions, carry out their doom. Below, the four creatures covered with eyes, the lamps of the seven churched, and the lamb above all, watch on.”
